New Columbia, officially the Commonwealth of New Columbia, is a pancontinental country in North America. Bounded by three oceans and the United States to the south, it is the largest sovereign state by landmass and the pre-eminent power on Earth. New Columbians mainly speak three official languages and live in over 60 cities with a population exceeding 1,000,000. The state's unique plurinational nature is enshrined in its Founding Compact.

Although inhabited by Sovereign Indigenous peoples since time immemorial, the recorded history of New Columbia began with the 16th century colonization of its Atlantic coast. These early French, English, and Spanish* holdings rapidly grew dissatisfied with colonial rule, culminating in the Simultaneous Revolution of 1789. While its founding fathers practiced skillful diplomacy, historians agree that the independence of the young Commonwealth was mostly preserved by the widespread expectation that the new state would immediately disintegrate.

A monarchy in name only, the Commonwealth maintains a "vacant throne" and elects a powerless Viceroy by approval vote. All practical authority is held by the Popular House, a parliament of 600 members, and its anointed Premier is New Columbia's highest official. The country's politics are historically divided along unionist vs. federalist lines, respectively favouring a strong central government or provincial autonomy. These movements are currently represented by Union and the Liberal-Alliance, the two dominant political groupings that claim every Premier of the last 80 years. The balance of power in the House is periodically held by minor parties, 7 of which are currently represented there.

Statement of Intent

I'm a full-time cartographer. Why wouldn't I have multiple private fantasy worlds?

New Columbia is an exploration of all the little differences between Canada and the United States. North American audiences will recognize it as an odd mashup of their countries.
